SIRAS Safety Bulletin 20231120a

This Bulletin regards SIRAS flight control firmware (FW) and ground control station (GCS) unit. Please immediately ground your SIRAS UAV until you have reviewed and complied with this Safety Bulletin.

Teledyne FLIR is notifying SIRAS customers to inform them of an issue that has come to our attention that may affect certain SIRAS GCS units manufactured prior to May 10, 2023. These GCSs (a.k.a SIRAS controller) may have a defective GPS antenna, which if not working properly can impact performance and safety.  Specifically, when used in combination with older versions of the flight control firmware (e.g. 1.16.39 and 1.16.49), affected GCSs could result in the SIRAS losing GPS lock and switching to Attitude (A) flight mode during flight, which is a more difficult mode in which to fly the SIRAS, especially for less experienced pilots. If you have the current version of the SIRAS flight control firmware (i.e. 1.16.65 or newer), the GCS issue may prevent SIRAS from taking off due to an inability to for the GCS to obtain a GPS lock.  Under no circumstances should you bypass GPS lock and take off in Attitude mode if you cannot achieve GPS lock.

  1. It is critical that you are running firmware 1.16.65 or newer. You can identify the current flight control firmware installed on your unit by tapping the three dot icon in the upper right corner of the GCS control screen and then selecting the “About” menu.  If the display shows you are not running firmware 1.16.65 or newer, immediately download firmware 1.16.65 or newer from the SIRAS webpage at https://www.flir.com/support/products/siras/#Downloads and follow the instructions included in the download for updating the firmware.
  2. If the last eight (8) digits of your SIRAS airframe serial number (located on bottom of SIRAS airframe) is 30600076 or higher, you do not need to do anything further.
  3. If the last eight digits of your airframe serial number is less than 30600076, enter the last eight digits of your SIRAS airframe serial number in the form below to receive an automated response indicating if your SIRAS GCS is affected.
  4. If your SIRAS GCS is not affected, no further action is required.
  5. If your SIRAS GCS is affected, please complete the form below.
  6. You will receive a compliant GCS from Teledyne FLIR with a return address label to return your affected GCS at no cost.
  7. You can continue to fly your drone with its original GCS if you are running firmware 1.16.65 or newer and are able achieve GPS lock at takeoff. Under no circumstances should you bypass GPS lock and take off in Attitude mode if you cannot achieve GPS lock.
